Help for Haiti

In 2009, the international leadership of the Vincentian Family, which encompasses all those who find inspiration from the life and the legacy of St. Vincent de Paul, joined Haitian microfinance institution Fonkoze to initiate a pilot project to fund sustainable economic development in Haiti. Zafen.org enables people worldwide to loan or donate to businesses in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest on earth. Visit www.zafen.org to find out more.

Cathedral of Our Lady of The Assumption

The Cathedral of Our Lady of The Assumption was built in 1928 and served the Diocese of Port-au-Prince as its spiritual home.  The earthquake has made it unusable while enough still stands for us to see its original beauty.

Evangelical Theological Seminary

Evangelical Theological Seminary of Port-au-Prince was founded in 1942 and has served 600 students.  The earthquake destroyed its classroom building while leaving the residence call more or less untouched.

Tent Cities

Setting up temporary shelters was a priority immediately after the earthquake.  Tent cities like this one may provide some of the basics, but will not be of much help during the rainy season, May to July, especially given the high winds that accompany these annual rains.

Camp St. Vincent de Paul

Among the responses to temporary housing is Camp St. Vincent de Paul set-up by the Vincentians.  This camp provides small (2 room) wooden houses for many families while also providing tents for a number of other families.  As funds are available, more wooden houses will be built.
