Our Vincentian Family

March 1, 1624

 

Archbishop Jean-Francois de Gondi of Paris makes the College des Bons-Enfants available to St. Vincent de Paul. It is the first residence of the Congregation of the Mission.

March 3, 1796

 

Peter Rene Rogue, CM, is guillotined in his hometown of Vannes, France. He is 38 years old.

March 8, 1842

 

Jean-Marie Odin, CM, is consecrated bishop in New Orleans. He becomes the first bishop of Galveston, Texas, and the second archbishop of New Orleans.

March 11, 1934

 

Louise de Marillac is canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1934.

March 12, 1854

 

The Spaniard Thaddeus Amat, CM, is consecrated bishop. He becomes the second bishop of Monterey, California.

March 14, 1805

 

Elizabeth Ann Seton is formally received into the Catholic Church at St. Peter Church, New York City.

March 15, 1660

 

Louise de Marillac dies in Paris at the age of 70. Her burial is March 17. Her body remained in the Church of Saint Lawrence until 1755 when it was transferred to the Motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity.

March 18, 1870

 

The Irishman John Joseph Lynn, CM, is appointed first Archbishop of Toronto, Canada.

March 25, 1642

 

Louise de Marillac and four companions take vows for life in the Church of Saint Nicolas-du-Chardonnet, Paris. Annual vows become universal by 1718.

March 25, 1805

 

Elizabeth Ann Seton receives First Communion at Peter Church, New York.

March 25, 1809

 

In the presence of Archbishop Carroll of Baltimore, Elizabeth Ann Seton takes her first vows for one year as a Sister of Charity. She assumes the title of "Mother" of her new religious community.

March 25, 1824

 

Joseph Rosati, CM, is consecrated Co-adjutor Bishop of New Orleans. Later, he becomes the first bishop of St. Louis.

March 25, 1850

 

The union of the Sisters of Charity of Mother Seton and the Daughters of Charity of St. Louise and St. Vincent is formally joined.
