Around the Provinces: Confrere News and Updates
MIDWEST PROVINCE:St. Louis: On October 2, 2005 in St. Louis, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul celebrated the 160th anniversary of its US beginnings originally at the “Old Cathedral” on November 20, 1845. Father John Timon, CM, first Provincial of the American Province, learned of the impressive work of the Society for the poor during his visits to Paris and was moved to encourage its work in the Diocese of St. Louis. Meanwhile, in visiting Dublin, he had acquired a copy of the Rules and By-Laws of the Society and introduced them to St. Louis, where prominent lay leaders who were already doing work for the poor were receptive to the idea of the organization. The Ordinary, Bishop Peter Richard Kenrick, was also encouraged, and he established the Society at his Cathedral parish on the above date. The Society is still flourishing in the Archdiocese. The names of Timon, Kenrick, and Father Ambrose Heim, a diocesan priest and associate pastor, are forever linked with this important beginning in the United States. Father Jack Melito, CM, represented the community at the celebration. Saint-Lazare House, St. Louis: Father Ed Murphy, CM, and members of the Gateway Vincentian Volunteers attended a ministry day on the Feast of St. Vincent at Trinity High School where Father Jim Bieghlie, CM, teaches. Fr. Bieghlie invited them to talk about the poor in our city and efforts to be of help and assistance to them. DePaul University, Chicago: The William and Mary Pat Gannon Hay Vincent de Paul Leadership Project is pleased to announce the launch of an on-line, searchable Vincentian Family Database. Funded by the Vincentian Endowment Fund, the database is a clearinghouse of over 350 Vincentian organizations worldwide. The database is searchable by keyword, name, affiliation, country or category. The Vincentian Family Database is linked to the DePaul Leadership Project website at: http://leadership.depaul.edu. DePaul Vincentian Residence, Chicago: Father Ron Hoye, CM, has moved the Vocation Office of the Midwest Province to DePaul University. He continues his efforts with various youth groups. Father Jaroslav Jasso, CM, is the newest of the international Vincentians living and studying at the University. Of Slovak nationality, Jaro, as he likes to be called, has been working for the last several years in the new province of Saints Cyril and Methodius, with its headquarters in Kiev, Ukraine. Father John Rybolt, CM, has just returned from a few weeks helping the province of Australia with seminars for the confreres. He returned through the new mission seminary in the Solomon Islands. He continues his work of research and writing of the general history of the Congregation. New Publications: We Worship: A Guide to the Catholic Mass, by Father Oscar Lukefahr, CM, (Ligori Press) has been released. Father Tom Esselman, CM, recently published an article on technology and theological pedagogy entitled: “What Technology Can Teach about Theological Pedagogy” and it was published in the book, Educating Leaders for Ministry: Issues and Responses. Edited by Victor Klimoski, Kevin O’Neill and Katarina Schuth (Collegeville Liturgical Press, 2005, pp. 134-162). The September 2005 issue of Catholic Education: A Journal of Inquiry and Practice contains an article, entitled: “Vincentian Education and the Charism of St. Vincent de Paul,”written by Father Tony Dosen, CM. Award: We are pleased to announce the 2005 Role of Law Award, presented by the Canon Law Society of America and the Board of Governors, was given to Father Paul L. Golden, CM. Each year the Canon Law Society of America presents its distinguished Role of Law Award to an individual considered to be outstanding in the field of canonical science. The By-Laws of the Society directs the Board of Governors to select a person who demonstrates in his or her life and legal practice the following characteristics: Embodiment of pastoral attitude, commitment to research and study, participation in the development of law, response to needs or practical assistance, facilitation of dialogue and the interchange of ideas within the Society and with other groups. SOUTHERN PROVINCE:Comments from Father Dan Borlik, CM: In the midst of a world seemingly beset by one natural disaster after another — today’s global news is filled with stories of thousands buried by earthquakes in Pakistan and hundreds lost in mudslides in Central America — I pray that we do not become crisis-fatigued but continue to reach out to those we can help. In addition, let us keep in prayers the many thousands of families and individuals displaced in our own country by the recent hurricanes. New Orleans: Since Hurricane Katrina four men (Fathers Perry Henry, Jim Steinbach, George Weber and Mark Ford, CM) had been living at Holy Trinity Residence in Dallas while two (Fathers Bob Lamy and Dennis Martin, CM) were with family members. Let me here publicly thank Fathers Jack Cawley and Rex Hayes, CM, for their gracious hospitality to these men and other evacuees who have been welcomed there during this crisis. Fr. Perry Henry, CM, is assigned to head up our re-building/recovery team in the New Orleans area. I have delegated him as my representative concerning insurance and re-building contracts for Southern Province-owned properties in New Orleans. Bro. Jim Steinbach, CM, is now assigned to assist him full time. Fr. George Weber, CM, (pastor of St. Stephen’s) and Fr. Bob Lamy, CM, (retired) have now returned to St. Stephen’s.
