Serving Christ, Serving the Poor
There are many stories of how the Society of St. Vincent de Paul helps the poor: through food pantries, shelters for the homeless and abused, emergency financial assistance, disaster relief, and job training. But for every one of these stories – and there are hundreds of thousands every year – there is another story of how an ordinary member of the laity has been equally helped by being of service to the poor.
Vincentians Jubilee
AT THIS TIME OF YEAR we like to highlight those Vincentian priests and brothers who are celebrating their 25th and 50th anniversaries of ordination (for priests) or
final vows (for brothers). As you can see here, this year’s
jubilarians come from a variety of backgrounds and have
been involved in wide variety of Vincentian ministries. Despite their differences, you will also see that they all understand what it means to serve the poor, the forgotten, the sick, and the suffering. Whether retired or in active
ministry, these men represent the legacy of St. Vincent
de Paul as they “follow Jesus Christ evangelizing the poor.”
Obituaries
Brother Stanley Conner, CM 1946–2008
Brother Stanley J. Conner, CM, was born to Stanley J. and Mildred Lee Conner in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He earned degrees in education and music from Southeast Missouri State University and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He became acquainted with the Vincentians while teaching music in Cape Girardeau and entered the Congregation of the Mission in 1975. In 1983, Bro. Conner professed final vows and earned a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Studies from De Andreis Institute of Theology.
Reverend Henry J. Piacitelli, CM 1918–2008
Father Henry Piacitelli, CM, was born to John and Helen Piacitelli in Sunnyside, Utah. Following the advice of the Daughters of Charity who taught at the local Catholic school, he attended St. Vincent’s College, the high school seminary for Congregation of the Mission in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. After graduation in 1937, he entered the Vincentian novitiate in Perryville, and after following the normal course of seminary studies was ordained a priest in 1945. He died at Mother of Good Counsel Home in St. Louis, on March 6, 2008, after battling cancer for more than a year. His funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Catherine Labouré Church, with Father James Swift, CM, Provincial, presiding.
The Vincentian is published bimonthly by the Midwest and Southern Provinces of the Congregation of the Mission, the Vincentian Priests and Brothers, to promote the apostolic works of its members and those of the larger Vincentian Family.
