Chicago – Perboyre Mission House

On September 12, Jeremy Dixon, CM was ordained a transitional deacon by the Most Rev. Francis Kane, auxiliary bishop of Chicago. Many family and friends were in attendance, including the directors and alumni from the Gateway Vincentian Volunteers, where Deacon Jeremy served some years ago.

Father Anthony Dosen, CM, is the author of a newly published book, Catholic Higher Education in the 1960s: Issues of Identity, Issues of Governance. According to the publisher, the scholarly work is “a series of cases that describes and analyzes the transitions made by representative Catholic institutions in their attempts to update their governance structures and maintain their Catholic identity in the midst of the post-Vatican II era.”

Denver – DePaul House

Father Paul Golden, CM, is currently teaching a distance learning course in canon law through Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis for students who live in Oklahoma City. Using a blended course style, Fr. Golden works with the students online, and travels twice during the semester to Oklahoma City for weekend classes. This model of distance learning was designed and initiated at Aquinas Institute some years ago by Father Tom Esselman, CM.

St. Louis – Lazarist Residence

Father Larry Asma, CM, began his missionary work on the island of Trinidad – Tobago in September. He recently reported on his work with the students at St. John Vianney and the Uganda Martyrs Regional Seminary. There are about 40 students in the academic program, eight of whom are seminarians from the various islands that make up the Antilles Episcopal Conference. The seminarians hail from the dioceses of Port of Spain (Trinidad-Tobago), Willemstad (Curacao), Castries (St Lucia), Kingstown (Jamaica), and St. George’s (Bermuda).

Father Mike Joyce, CM, was elected vice president of the Canon Law Society of America during its annual convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Next year he will automatically succeed as president. In addition to Fr. Joyce’s role in the Society, Father Tom Anslow, CM (Province of the West) currently serves as treasurer and Father Paul Golden, CM, is a past president.

St. Louis – Midwest Province Office

We bid a fond and sad farewell to Ms. Kristin Durow, who for the past 10 years has worked at the Midwest Province office, first as administrative assistant to the provincial treasurer, and then as staff accountant and HR coordinator. We are pleased to announce that Ms. Dianne Trimble has joined the Province finance office.  Dianne is the mother of three grown children and lives in O’Fallon, Missouri. She received her education at Maryville University. Dianne joins us with over 20 years experience in accounting, financial analysis, budgeting, and employee benefits. Welcome, Dianne!

Kenya – DePaul Centre

James Kariuki, CM, was ordained a transit-ional deacon on October 10, in Nairobi, Kenya. The ordination liturgy had to take place on the lawn outside Tangaza College because 29 seminarians from other religious communities were ordained at the same time – too many for even the largest church in Nairobi! Tangaza College is the school near DePaul Centre where our seminarians receive their theological education.

Through the generosity of the Vincentians living at Rosati House in Chicago, DePaul Centre in Nairobi now has a chicken ranch. The donation enabled Brother Tim Opferman, CM, to have a substantial chicken coop built in the compound. It now houses approximately 150 hybrid chicks, which should be fully grown and laying eggs sometime in January. The eggs will help control food costs, and any extra eggs will be sold to pay for chicken feed. Thus, the project has the potential to be self-sustaining.

The Vincentian is published bimonthly by the Western Province of the Congregation of the Mission, the Vincentian Priests and Brothers, to promote the apostolic works of its members and those of the larger Vincentian Family.
